“Operating spacecraft around comets: Evaluation of the near-nucleus environment”

چکیده

We present a study of the current state knowledge concerning spacecraft operations and potential hazards while operating near comet nucleus. Starting from simple calculations comparing cometary coma environment to benign conditions on Earth, we progress sophisticated engineering models behavior, then confront these with recent proximity experience. Finally, make recommendations lessons learned for future missions that enter into orbit around long-term operations. All considerations indicate that, proper design planning, near-nucleus can be relatively safe region in which operate, even an active short period perihelion gas production rates as high 1e29 molecules/s. With densities similar those found good laboratory vacuums, dust Class 100 cleanrooms, particle velocities 10s m/s, microgravity forces permit slow deliberate operations, are generally more than typical day Mars. Even strong jets nucleus surface, tend only few grains/cm3, about same interior room Earth. Stochastic modern tens square meters projected surface area accounted using Attitude Control Systems within navigation error; contamination issues important spending months years kilometers surface; Rosetta faced, confusion celestial star trackers by sunlit particles flying past spacecraft, will addressed next generation implementing improved transient rejection algorithms.

Cooperative Fabrication of the NEAR Spacecraft

ooperative fabrication was a key factor in building the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft within the cost and schedule constraints dictated by the NASA Discovery Program. Because many of the traditional barriers between the engineering and the fabrication teams were avoided on NEAR, APL reaped the benefits of cooperative planning, design for ease of fabrication and assembly, and ...

Evaluation within the environment of an operating information service

This chapter deals with the problems of evaluating operating information services, the objective of such evaluation being to determine how successful the service is in satisfying the needs of its users. The major emphasis of the chapter is the 'human aspects' of information services, machine aspects being dealt with in the chapter by Barraclough. The chapter first introduces some basic concepts...

The Science of Sungrazers, Sunskirters, and Other Near-Sun Comets

This review addresses our current understanding of comets that venture close to the Sun, and are hence exposed to much more extreme conditions than comets that are typically studied from Earth. The extreme solar heating and plasma environments that these objects encounter change many aspects of their behaviour, thus yielding valuable information on both the comets themselves that complements ot...

Near-Minimum Time Optimal Control of Flexible Spacecraft during Slewing Maneuver

The rapid growth of space utilization requires extensive construction, and maintenance of space structures and satellites in orbit. This will, in turn, substantiate application of robotic systems in space. In this paper, a near-minimum-time optimal control law is developed for a rigid space platform with flexible links during an orientating maneuver with large angle of rotation. The time opti...
